FENCING for grades 3-12

Often called "physical chess," modern fencing allows participants of all ages and attributes to meet on a more equal footing than almost any other sport. With its origins in armed combat, honor and intrigue, this isn’t what you see in the movies, but a contact sport and true martial art. As a martial art, fencing teaches respect for one’s opponents, and mental, physical and emotional control.  Students begin with the fundamentals of Olympic-style foil fencing; attack, defense, and proper “etiquette”— progressing to concepts of distance, timing, and strategy. Emphasis is on developing a usable and solid foundation through body-awareness exercises, group/paired practice, drills, demonstrations and explanations.

Cost: $24 per child per single (private) lesson or $165 per child for group lessons for 12 weeks. The time is flexible for the private lessons; group lessons start at 4 p.m. Interested in fencing instruction? Call the Youth Center: (781) 225-6043.

Fencing equipment provided. Families can sign up at the Youth Center. Open to grades 3 through 12. Students must wear workout clothes (including sweatpants), and tennis or court shoes. Instructor: Rob Hupp has fenced
for more than 40 years, and has been both a competitor and coach. He has taught fencers of all ability levels
and ages.

Youth Sports

The Youth Sports Program has partnered with local town recreation departments
so we can continue to provide fun, safe, developmentally appropriate sports activities for children to learn, grow and excel at their own pace and ability while teaching individual sport skills, sportsmanship, teamwork and sense of community. We feel the athletic field is the arena where children can have fun, make new friends, and learn new skills and build on existing ones. The importance of participation, physical fitness, social interaction, leadership development, sportsmanship, teamwork and the importance of academics in relation to sports at all levels are stressed.
